Hey there! Thanks for taking the time to check out my continually developing blog. My name is Dalton and I grew up in the beautiful city of Destin, FL.
As a child, I was always climbing up the walls to see or do something I’ve never done before. I was never satisfied with just looking at something, I had to touch it. My mother would tell you that my curiosity always caused more harm than good. Let’s just say, I’m a prime example of the hot stove cliche.
Though I’ve learned to somewhat control my impulsive nature, as an adult, my burning curiosity has never faded.
What Drives Me?
Growing up, my family always took me on amazing trips to different parts of the world. Those memories are what I constantly find myself daydreaming of. Nothing made me feel more alive than experiencing different cultures, tasting new food, or hearing the strange sounds of another language. I fell in love with the countryside of the Netherlands and was absolutely mesmerized by the urban architecture of Paris.
My love of exploring started the minute I crossed the border.
Traveling exposes you to so many different ways of life. I will never forget, traveling to Isla Majerus with my family and thinking how wonderful the island was! I wondered how anyone could anyone ever leave this place? It was paradise! It took a short trip through the slums to see the flip side of paradise. I couldn’t believe that people were literally living in stick shelters only covered by rusted tin roofs. The only possessions they had were the garbage left behind by tourist.
Coming from America, I understood that some people couldn’t afford certain luxuries in life but, I had never seen such extreme poverty before. That exact moment is when I developed a true understanding of what extreme poverty looked like. It created a deep feeling of sadness within me that made me want to offer a helping hand to whoever I could. This became one of my biggest motivations, helping others.
A little More About Me
After graduating from the University of Central Missouri, I started working in my family’s insurance agency. It was a great 8-5 job and with the future prospect of one day becoming the owner. After 2 years of sitting behind a desk, I found myself constantly daydreaming of being somewhere else instead of focusing on work.
It wasn’t long after, that life suddenly created the perfect circumstances for me to make the decision to follow my dreams. I made up my mind. No matter the cost, I would find a way follow my passions. So, I joined the Peace Corps and now I’m headed to Thailand to help with Youth Development. My journey starts January 5th, 2017 and I couldn’t be more excited!
Giving to others is the most important thing you can do in life. Joining the Peace Corps isn’t solely about traveling. It’s also about sharing your knowledge, failures, and successes with other people so they can also enjoy the best parts of our amazing world. It take’s small efforts to make a BIG difference and I hope my story will inspire you to make those small efforts.
I don’t want you to confuse this blog with being about me. I want to show how positive change is as easy as taking one single step. Hopefully, by following my story you might find your own adventure and take your fist step.
