How To Build Your Peace Corps Résumé

Originally, I wasn’t going to go into much detail about the Peace Corp resume, until I received some feedback from a friend. He was also looking to join the Peace Corps and wanted my advice on getting accepted. This lead to me asking about what job he wanted in the Peace Corps and if his resume reflected that he is qualified for it. After giving him some ideas and advice, we were able to develop a basis for him to structure his Peace Corps resume.

Here’s What I Told Him

Your Peace Corps Resume needs to reflect these 3 things:

  1. You’re qualified for the job.
  2. You’re tough enough to live in a stressful environment for 2 years.
  3. You are self-sufficient and independent.

Use relevant jobs, experiences, clubs, hobbies, sports, and acquired skills that will directly reflect these 3 points. Of course, you need to know what position you are applying for starting this. If you haven’t decided, this should help The Peace Corps: How to Pick Your Country And Service.

For Your Reference

Here is my Peace Corps resume as an example! My goal was to keep my Peace Corps resume simple and clean but still cover the 3 main points. Military Academy (2010-2012)
In my second year of attending Wentworth Military Academy, I was appointed 2nd cadet in command of Bravo Company. I was in charge of developmental training of both high school and college cadets.

Army ROTC (2010-2014)
In my 4rth year of being a ROTC cadet at the University of Central Missouri, I held the position of staff training officer (STO).In this position, I was responsible for training and assessing soldiers for squad and platoon operations.

Thrive (2014)
For my senior seminar class at the University of Central Missouri, I focused my final project towards evaluating the THRIVE program at our school. THRIVE is a program for special needs students to where they can attend college for 2 years, in order to learn the skills necessary to be self-sufficient. I administered an aptitude test the first and final year of the students and found that the program significantly helped the special needs students.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida (2015-2016)
As a Big Brother in this program, I mentored an 8-year-old kid that came from an abusive background. My main responsibility was to be an overall positive influence like a “big brother” would. I visited him every Friday at the elementary school to set academic goals and give him a helping hand in whatever he was struggling in.

Ferguson Insurance Agency (2015-2016)
After obtaining my 2-20 General lines license I started working at Ferguson Insurance Agency. Within a year of being at the agency, I was promoted to Assistant Vice President and was in charge of running the personal line department.

Training

Military Academy
Attending to Wentworth Military Academy for two years trained me to be a more disciplined and regimented person. I learned the importance of structure, leadership, and perseverance.

Army ROTC
4 years as an Army ROTC cadet strongly developed my skills at being a leader. At the leadership development assessment course (LDAC), which is a 30 day training evaluation to see if you’re qualified to be an Army officer, I assessed at an overall E for excellence, peer evaluated as top 5 in my platoon, and ranked in the top 8% of cadets in the nation at that time.
